Can we talk about what my old boss said about sanding before stain
I was grabbing coffee with my first boss last week, guy is 68 and still building cabinets out of his garage in Parma. He looked at a sample board I was proud of and said "you sanded that like you were mad at it." I've been going up to 220 grit for 15 years and never once thought about it. He told me to stop at 150 before stain because going finer just closes the grain and the wood stops drinking the color even. Now I'm second guessing my whole finishing routine on the oak table I just started. Any of you guys sand past 150 before stain, or is he right?
