Took me 11 months to figure out why I kept getting passed over for team lead roles
So I spent almost a year convinced I was doing something wrong with my resume, rewrote it four times, paid a guy on Fiverr $75 to make it look nicer, and none of it mattered. The real problem was that I never once asked my manager what the team lead job even required, I just assumed it was about being the best at the actual work. Turns out the two leads who got picked before me had both been running the weekly client call for six months, which I didn't even know was a thing you could volunteer for. When I finally sat down with my boss in March and asked point blank, she said quote, I didn't know you wanted it, you never said anything. Eleven months of resume tinkering and the fix was a five minute conversation I was too nervous to have. I'm not saying resumes don't matter but I put way too much weight on the paper and not enough on just telling people what I wanted. Has anyone else had a boss basically hand them the answer the second they actually asked for it?
