Am I the only one who thinks job hopping every 18 months is a bad idea?
A recruiter in Dallas told me last month that my 6 years at one company made me look "stagnant," and I almost bought it until I remembered she gets paid when I leave. Is loyalty really dead, or did we all just get talked into job hopping by people who profit from it?
Why do we trust the people who make money off our choices to tell us what our choices mean? That recruiter's advice is like a car salesman telling you your old car is worthless, of course they want you to trade it in! I see this pattern everywhere now, the same way stores push extended warranties or phone companies want you to upgrade every year, there's always someone cashing in when you ditch what you have. Six years somewhere means you know the place, you have real relationships, and you probably got good at your job, that is not stagnant, that is stable. Job hopping might bump your pay short term but you lose all that built up trust and knowledge every time you start over. The people telling us loyalty is dead are usually the ones who profit from us believing it.
