Shoutout to that random diner I ended up at after my hiking trip got rained out
Me and my buddy were supposed to hit the Billy Goat Trail last Saturday but the sky opened up right when we got there. We bailed and grabbed breakfast at this hole in the wall place called The Silver Skillet in Frederick instead. The waitress was probably 70 years old and she brought us these homemade cinnamon rolls that were still warm. I swear the whole vibe was better than any hike we could've had. Anyone else find a good spot by accident after plans fell through?

Feels like some folks are treating a rainy Saturday like a personal failure instead of just a change of plans. A warm cinnamon roll and good company isn't a betrayal of nature, it's just a different kind of morning. Sometimes a story is just a story without needing a debate about life choices attached to it.

That whole "better than any hike" thing just doesn't sit right with me. You drove all the way to the Billy Goat Trail, got rained out, and ended up eating cinnamon rolls at a diner run by a grandma. It's a nice story but it's not like you planned to get rained on. I get that the rolls were warm and the waitress was sweet but let's not pretend a sugary breakfast beats getting out on the trail. You missed the whole point of the hike which is the exercise and the views and the fresh air.

Push back on that take. Billy Goat Trail is overrated anyway. I've done that hike three times and it's just rocks and a little river. The Silver Skillet on the other hand has been there since the 50s and that cinnamon roll recipe is probably older than both of us combined. I'd take a warm pastry from a place with actual character over another Instagram photo of the Potomac any day. People act like exercise is the only valid way to spend a morning but sometimes sitting down with bad coffee and good company is its own kind of fresh air. Not everything has to be a workout to count as a good day.
