Rant: the bank branch on Sainte-Catherine made me wait 40 minutes to close one account
Last Tuesday I walked into my bank branch on Sainte-Catherine in Montreal to close a savings account I opened back in 2019. I took a number, sat down, and watched three tellers help the same guy with a wire transfer for 40 minutes while the rest of us just stared at the screen. When I finally got called up, the rep told me I had to book a meeting with an advisor for next month because closures are "not a teller task" anymore. It got me thinking about how many Canadian fintech startups are actually solving this stuff, like instant account switching or digital-only onboarding. Has anyone here used a Canadian startup that lets you fully close or move an account without stepping into a branch?
So when you say closures are "not a teller task" anymore, did they actually give you a reason or just hand you the We'll book you an advisor line? I'm asking because I've heard the same thing from friends at different banks and it's always some version of the system won't let us do it at the counter. What happened to the paperwork you signed, did they at least confirm the account was still open and earning nothing while you wait a whole month? And when you book that meeting, do they even promise the closure happens that day, or can the advisor punt you again? Seems like the whole thing is built to wear you down until you give up, which is a hell of a business model.
