Okay day at Shenandoah turned into a wet mess by hour 6

Last Saturday I hiked the Old Rag loop with a new pack from REI, and the weather report said 10% rain. By the time I hit the summit, the skies opened up and my rainfly turned out to be a glorified trash bag, soaking my sleeping bag liner completely. Has anyone else trusted a forecast that specific and ended up sleeping in a puddle, or am I just cursed with bad luck?
