Last weekend's rain turned my cheap tent into a swimming pool

I went camping up near Lake Tahoe last Saturday and it poured all night. My old $40 tent from the discount store just couldn't handle it. Water seeped right through the floor and I woke up in a puddle at 3 AM. I'm thinking about spending around $150 on a proper tent with a bathtub floor. Has anyone else dealt with a tent that just gave up in heavy rain?

Oh man @lee_reed knows what's up! A buddy used a tarp wrong and woke up floating.

Hold on @milaw14, a tarp under the tent is the only way to go if you ask me.

Did you check if the tent had a sealed seam on the bottom before you bought it? I had the same problem with a cheap tent a few years back, water just came right up through the floor. What worked for me was grabbing a Kelty tent with a bathtub floor, that extra fabric lip around the bottom kept everything dry even in a storm. I also started putting a tarp under the tent, but you gotta fold it so it doesn't stick out or water will pool on top of it. Best $130 I ever spent, that tent is still going strong after three seasons.
