The repair guy in Osaka showed me his screwdriver drawer and I almost quit the trade
I was in Osaka two months ago for a family thing and I hit up a tiny repair shop in Nipponbashi that a buddy back home told me about. The owner is like 70 and he's been fixing cameras in that same 8x8 spot for close to 45 years. He pulls open this wooden drawer to grab a JIS driver for a Nikon F2 I brought in, and inside there are maybe 200 screwdrivers, all labeled by hand, separated by maker and size. Not one of them costs more than about 2000 yen. I asked him why he doesn't use a powered driver and he just laughed and said power strips screw heads on cameras older than me. Meanwhile I've got a $180 electric driver at my bench that I barely touch now. The part that got me is he sharpens his own flatheads on a whetstone every Sunday, said he's been doing it so long he can feel the right angle with his thumb. I felt like a total fraud standing there with my Harbor Freight set. Do any of you actually sharpen your own drivers, or am I the only one who just buys new ones when they get chewed up?
