I tried rubbing paraffin wax on my drawer slides instead of buying a $20 can of paste wax
Had some Gulf Wax sitting in the garage from my mom's old canning stuff so I figured why not. It actually worked great on the wooden runners for about three weeks, then it got gummy and collected sawdust like crazy. Anyone else mess with plain paraffin or am I the only one who ruined a dresser trying to save a few bucks?
That "got gummy and collected sawdust" part is exactly what happens with plain paraffin. It goes on fine but it never really dries, so it just turns into a dust magnet. What worked for me was scraping the old wax off with a plastic scraper and a little mineral spirits, then hitting the runners with a candle stub rubbed light, followed by a quick pass with a hair dryer so it soaks in instead of sitting on top. Johnson's paste wax is the real fix but if you want to stay cheap, plain old candle wax plus heat beats Gulf Wax every time. Live and learn, right?
