Found out a standard base cabinet wastes 6 inches of usable drawer space, and now I'm rebuilding my whole kitchen mentally
I was reading through an old woodworking magazine from 2019 in my dentist's waiting room last month and there was a breakdown of drawer box sizes versus cabinet openings. The writer measured 20 different base cabinets and found the average setup wasted about 6 inches of depth because the drawer box was sized for the frame, not the actual opening. I went back to my own shop and measured the last 8 drawer stacks I built, and sure enough, I'm leaving 4 to 7 inches on the table every single time. That's almost a full extra row of spices or a whole layer of silverware gone for no reason other than habit. I get why the standard sizes exist, but once you see it you can't unsee it. Has anyone here switched to custom depth drawer boxes on a regular basis, and did the extra cutting time actually pay off for you?
Oh wow, I heard a cabinet maker on a podcast say the same thing last year. He started building his own boxes deeper and said the only real cost was a few extra minutes per drawer. Never went back after that apparently.
