Am I the only one who didn't know a whole hog gives you over 400 pounds of saleable meat
I was reading through an old NAMP guide a buddy lent me and saw that a 250 pound live hog only yields about 140 to 160 pounds of cuts once you trim everything out. Blew my mind because I always guessed way higher when customers ask me for a whole hog order. A farmer near me in Hastings quoted me $1.85 a pound live weight last week, so that math works out fast. Any of you run into customers who think they're getting twice the meat they actually are?
Wait, only 140 to 160 pounds off a 250 pound hog? That is way less than I ever would have guessed. So you are telling me more than a third of that animal just walks out the door as bones, fat, and stuff nobody wants. At $1.85 a pound live that is a tough sell once a customer realizes what they are really paying per pound of actual meat.
