The 1099 form I never filed for 3 years caught up with me

I ran a small design gig out of Austin and thought subcontractors under $600 didn't need paperwork, turns out Texas tracks every invoice. A client asked for my W-9 last month and the accountant found I owed back taxes on 12 separate payments from 2021. Has anyone else learned this the hard way, or am I the only one who skimmed the IRS page?
