Turned down a $4k retainer from a guy in Toledo to keep my one big client, and my revenue went up $900
Six weeks ago I had to pick between taking on a second retainer client or giving my first client more hours, and I went with the one I already had. He ended up referring two smaller clients to me in the same period, which beat the retainer by $900 without the extra commute. Has anyone else turned down steady money and had it work out, or did I just get lucky this once?
My cousin did something kind of the same but with a rental property, she passed on a Section 8 tenant with guaranteed checks to keep a guy who paid cash and never bothered anyone. He ended up staying four extra years and fixing the fence himself, which saved her way more than the guaranteed rent would have brought in. It's hard to know if it's luck or just good karma, but I figure treating the people already in your corner right tends to come back around more often than not.
