Just realized the 50/30/20 rule is making people feel like failures
I keep seeing folks in here beating themselves up because their housing eats 45% of take home and they think they're doing it wrong. But the rule was written for a typical single person in a big city, not a family of four in Des Moines or someone in a high rent area. My own rent is 42% of my income, and after tracking for 6 months I found my other numbers are actually solid. The win is knowing your real fixed costs and adjusting the split instead of forcing a rigid formula. Has anyone else ditched the standard percentages and made their own targets that actually fit their life?
