Chose the $12 hostel dorm over the $35 private room in Lisbon and honestly it worked out
When I got to Lisbon in March I had two choices for 4 nights: a $12 dorm bed in Alfama or a $35 private room out by the airport. I went with the dorm and saved $92 total, which paid for my train to Porto and most of my food for the trip. The first night was rough because a guy came in at 3am and turned on the big light, but by night two I had earplugs and a sleep mask from the front desk for free. The best part was a girl from Brazil in my room who drew me a map of cheap places to eat that tourists never find. I ate a full lunch with wine for $7 two days in a row because of that map. Has anyone else found that the cheap shared room ends up being the better trip, or did I just get lucky with good roommates?
