The 2,000 calorie dinner myth I kept buying into

I saw a stat last Tuesday that said the average family meal costs about $21 to make from scratch, but a frozen lasagna runs $9. That sounds cheaper until you realize the frozen one feeds two and the scratch one feeds six. I did the math on my own kitchen in Columbus and we were spending almost $4 per person on frozen stuff versus $1.75 per person on a big pot of chili. Has anyone else actually tracked cost per serving instead of just the sticker price?

Last week I made a big pot of white bean and sausage soup for my family and it came out to about $1.60 a bowl with bread. Meanwhile my youngest asked for those microwave mac and cheese cups and the store brand was like $2.50 for a single serving. It genuinely blew my mind how much we were paying for convenience without even thinking about it. I started jotting down what we actually eat in a little notebook and yeah, the sticker price trick is real. Good on you for actually doing the math, most people never get past the initial number.
