My $5 veggie haul turned into a soup disaster on a Tuesday night
I grabbed a big bag of wilted carrots and peppers from the discount rack at Food Lion in Raleigh for $5, feeling pretty proud of myself. Got home, chopped everything up, and tossed it all in the pot with some old broth. Ten minutes later the kitchen smelled like burnt socks because I forgot to stir and the bottom just scorched. I ended up scraping the top layer into bowls and calling it smoky stew, but my roommate took one bite and ordered pizza. What do you guys do when a cheap meal goes sideways like that?
That scorched pot smell is the worst, it hangs around for hours no matter how many windows you open. I did the same thing with a batch of dried beans last month, walked away to check my phone and came back to a black layer stuck to the bottom of my good pot. Soaking it with baking soda and hot water overnight got most of it off, in case you're still scrubbing. The pizza order is a fair call though, sometimes you just have to cut your losses.
