Before and after: $38 a week on takeout to $38 a week on groceries, what changed
Three months ago I was blowing $38 every week on lunch near my office in Austin, and now that same $38 covers all my lunches plus two dinners, but my coworker swears the grocery runs take too much time and the cost savings are not worth it, so is it really cheaper once you count the prep time or am I just fooling myself?
Does your coworker also count the time they spend standing in line at the taco place? I spend maybe 40 minutes on Sunday doing a big chop and cook session, and that covers five lunches plus two dinners, so that's like two bucks in time per meal if you value yourself at minimum wage. The real trick is not treating grocery shopping like a fun outing with ten stops, just get in, grab your stuff, get out. Tell your coworker the drive to the office lunch spot costs gas too, so unless they're walking there for free, the math is not on their side.
