Took me 3 weeks to figure out my pothos was drowning, not thirsty

I kept watering my golden pothos on 6th Street because the leaves looked droopy and sad, and it just got worse until half the vine turned yellow. Turns out I was drowning it the whole time, the soil stayed wet for 12 days in that ceramic pot with no drainage hole, and a guy at the plant shop on 5th told me to stop watering for 3 weeks straight. Pulled it out and the roots were brown mush, so I cut everything back and repotted in terracotta with chunky perlite mix. What's your go to trick for telling overwatering apart from underwatering before the leaves start dropping?
