Successfully kept my first maidenhair fern alive for 3 months now
I was always told they were fussy divas that would drop dead if you looked at them wrong, but I picked up a sad looking one from a grocery store clearance rack for $5 back in February. Misted it every morning and kept it in a pebble tray on my bathroom counter, and it just pushed out four new fronds this week. Anyone else find a supposed 'difficult' plant that actually ended up being easy for them?

Right, that clearance rack is a goldmine for plants people have given up on. I got a calathea that was basically just crispy sticks and a whisper of a green leaf left, put it in a self watering pot with distilled water and now it's huge and putting out new leaves every couple weeks. People freak out about them needing high humidity but mine just chills in a normal room with a pebble tray and never gets crispy. Why do you think some of these fussy plants just click for some people but not others?

Wait, you actually got a maidenhair fern from a clearance rack and it SURVIVED?

The clearance rack is actually the best place to grab tricky plants like maidenhair ferns. Most people kill them with overwatering before they even hit the discount bin. If you snag one that's still got some green fronds and a bit of root structure, you're already ahead of the game.
