PSA: That $35 soil moisture meter I bought online was a total waste of money.

It gave me three different readings for the same potted fern, so I went back to just sticking my finger in the dirt, and honestly, has anyone found a brand of these things that actually works reliably?

Maybe your fern's just moody, phoenix_grant34, mine works fine if I don't poke it near the roots.

Total scam, those things. @phoenix_grant34 is right to go back to the finger test. Bought one that looked legit, and it said "dry" for a bone-dry cactus and "wet" for the same pot five seconds later. They just can't handle dense potting soil.
