My neighbor's tomato comment made me question my whole approach

I was out back last Tuesday pruning my 12 year old rose bushes and this older guy from two doors down walked over. He pointed at my drip lines and said "you water the dirt, not the plant, that's why you fight aphids every June." It hit different because he was right after 5 years of me spraying soap solution on the leaves every spring. Now I'm wondering what other basics I've got backwards. Has anyone else had a random stranger's simple observation fix a problem you'd been wrestling with for seasons?
