Hot take: moss on a roof is not a sign the shingles are shot
The guy who did my neighbor's roof on Patterson St told him the moss meant the deck was rotting and he needed a full tear off, and he almost paid for it. I climbed up there with him last Saturday and the shingles were fine, just shaded and damp on the north slope, which is exactly where moss grows. Moss holds water against the shingles but a soft wash with diluted bleach and a bristle brush kills it without tearing off a roof that has 10 years left on it. Anyone else had a roofer call moss a death sentence when it was really just a shade problem?
