Greenhouse bench or open soil for my cacti, picked wrong at first

I started 40 cactus seedlings last spring and had to choose between a heated greenhouse bench or direct open soil in my Portland backyard. I went with the bench because frost seemed scarier, but the seedlings got scorched in the afternoon sun and half of them cooked by June. Has anyone else dealt with heat stress on young cacti, and did you switch to a shade cloth or change your setup?
