DAE remember when a $30 awl from a hardware store in Dayton outlasted my fancy one?
I started binding about twelve years back, and my first real tool was a stitching awl I grabbed for $30 at an old hardware store in Dayton. Last month it finally snapped at the handle after maybe a thousand signatures, and I figured I'd upgrade to a nicer one that cost me $85. Honestly, the new one is heavier and the tip wanders on thicker folds, and I keep reaching for the broken one out of habit. Back then I didn't know any better and just bought what the guy behind the counter handed me, and it turned out to be the best money I ever put into this craft. Has anyone else found that the tool they bought before they knew anything still beats the pricey stuff they own now?
