Why does nobody talk about how a lending library book comes back smelling like someone else's kitchen?
I've been running a little swap shelf at my laundromat on 9th for about a year and a half. Most books come back fine. But there's this one paperback, a beat-up copy of a Sue Grafton novel, that has come back three times now smelling like curry and cigarette smoke. Not a big deal, but it made me realize people judge a book by the cover and never think about where it's been. When you hand over a book you're handing over a little piece of your house. Now I flip through every book before it goes back on the shelf. Does anyone else check for smells or crumbs or is that just me being picky?
handing over a book is handing over a little piece of your house" is the truest thing I've read all week, and honestly that curry and smoke combo sounds like the book had a whole weekend it never told you about. Three times though? That copy is living a fuller life than most of us. I'd be sniffing every return too, no shame in it. Crumbs I can forgive, but when a book comes back smelling like someone else's dinner, that's a whole story I didn't ask for.
