Picked a beat-up paperback over a new hardcover, best call I made

At the library book sale in Portland, I had $4 and two choices: a pristine copy of Piranesi or a dog-eared, coffee-stained version of The Secret History with someone's margin notes in pen. I grabbed the ugly one and the notes read like a secret conversation, pointing out stuff I never would've caught alone. Has anyone else found that reading a battered copy with stranger scribbles beats a clean edition? What's the best marked-up book you've swapped or bought?
