Borrowed a beat-up paperback of Dune from a swap bin and it had handwritten notes in the margins
I grabbed this old copy of Dune from a free bin at the library last Thursday because the cover was falling off and I felt bad for it. Someone wrote little comments in pencil throughout like Paul is too cocky here and watch the spice scene. It honestly made me read slower and think harder about parts I usually skim past. I learned that other readers can totally shift your view of a book even if you disagree with them. Has anyone else found a marked up book that changed how you read it?

Four bucks says the guy who wrote those notes was a salty old fan who read that book twenty times before the movie ever came out. I found a worn out copy of The Stand once with someone's name and a half finished grocery list on the inside cover, but no notes in the margins. That kind of stuff makes me wish every used book had a little history like that.

Did I find a marked up book or did my highlighter-crazed self just find a kindred spirit…

OH man that is SUCH a great find! I love when a worn out book has that kind of history baked into it. Those little notes feel like you're reading alongside someone who REALLY cared about the story, even if they were a bit grumpy about Paul. I found a copy of The Left Hand of Darkness once that had someone's angry scribbles about the pronouns in the margins, like "this is confusing on purpose" and "just pick one already." It totally made me notice how much work the book asks from you as a reader. Even when I disagreed with the person, it made the whole experience feel more like a conversation than just me alone with a story.
