Vent: I paid $40 for a book club pick I hated and finished it anyway
Our club voted 7 to 2 last month to read a 600 page novel that everyone online praises, and I got outvoted so I bought the hardcover for $40 at a store in Sacramento. Three chapters in I knew I was in trouble, but I kept going because I did not want to be the one person at the meeting with nothing to say. I spent 14 nights on that thing when I could have read two other books I actually liked, and by the end I was skimming whole paragraphs just to finish. At the meeting, four other people admitted they hated it too, which means we all wasted the same month pretending. Now I want to know how you all handle a pick you hate: do you bail early, skim it, or push through so you can argue about it?
Did you ever try just reading the first and last chapter and calling it good enough? I did that once with a 500 pager our club picked and nobody even noticed at the meeting. Life is too short and books cost too much to fake your way through 600 pages you hate.
