Rant: Our club almost split over picking 'Moby-Dick' or a modern thriller for next month.

I pushed for the thriller, thinking it would be easier, but the 'Moby-Dick' group won and the discussions about the symbolism have actually been way more interesting. Has your group ever had a fight over a classic versus a page-turner?

The real fight is over who gets to pick next month's book. We had to start a rotation system after the "Ulysses" debacle.

Remember my friend's group? They nearly fell apart over "Crime and Punishment" versus a new mystery. The classic won, and she said the talk about guilt was the best meeting they ever had.

Well, my book club almost had a real mutiny over "War and Peace"... we were all just so tired of trying to keep the Russian names straight. Sometimes the dense classic wins and you just have to go with it, even if you feel a bit silly when you mix up all the characters.
