Overheard a couple arguing about 'The Great Gatsby' at the library, and it made me reconsider the whole book

I was grabbing a kids' book for my youngest and this pair was going at it near the classics section. One person was saying Gatsby was a tragic hero, a man who believed in the American Dream. The other person said, 'No way, he was just a rich creep obsessed with a married woman, and the book shows how empty that whole world is.' They were both so sure, and quoting different parts to prove their point. I read it in high school and just thought it was about parties and a weird guy with a green light. Now I'm thinking I should re-read it without a teacher telling me what to think. Has anyone else had a book club debate totally change your view on a novel you thought you understood?

That train delay reading sounds rough. But honestly, the green light wasn't just about Daisy. It was about his whole idea of the past, which he could never really get back.

Reread it alone with a fresh cup of coffee, you'll see it completely differently.

The third time I read it, I was on a delayed train and finally got what @hannahsingh meant, lol.
