Our club keeps calling short story collections 'not a real book' and I think that rule is costing us good talks
We had our meeting at the library on Vine last Tuesday and 4 of 9 people voted down a collection by Ted Chiang before we even talked about it. Their reason was it is not a full book, so it does not count. I get wanting a big arc to talk about, but a 20 page story can hit harder than 300 pages of filler, and I have seen it happen twice now with this group. My take is that a collection counts as long as we pick one or two stories to dig into, not the whole set. The other side says a club reads books, not bits and pieces, and picking stories is just cheating. So which way do you all lean, do short stories stay on the list or do they get the boot? And if they stay, does the club pick the stories or does whoever suggests the book pick them? We vote again on the 14th and I would love some ammo either way.
