Our book club's resident hater made me love a slow burn

Last month at the Tuesday meetup in the back room of Danny's Pub, this guy Steve always trashes anything with less than a murder by page 10. He went off on The Secret History for a solid five minutes, calling it pretentious and boring. Then he admitted he re-read it twice and caught stuff he missed, like how the narrator lies about small things early on. That made me go back and check, and yeah, it hit different. Anyone else have a club member who accidentally convinced you to give a book another shot?
