Talking to a retired welder at the union hall made me miss the old ways
He said 'We used to hand-draft everything on vellum, now you kids just push a button.' It made me wonder if we're losing some craft with all this new tech. Anyone else feel that way sometimes?

Got to disagree a bit. The craft just moves to a different place. Like with my work, the skill is in the install and problem solving, not just the drawing. Tech lets us do more complex jobs faster, so we can focus on the hands on stuff that matters.

It's true the hands on part stays important, but maybe we're losing the middle ground skills. When tech handles the basics, do younger folks ever learn the simple fixes that build up to big problem solving? There's a gap now between pushing buttons and true deep knowledge.

Exactly. My nephew can't even change a tire now.
