PSA: A trick for stubborn flange bolts on a 20-year-old boiler in a Philly school

I was dealing with a set of eight flange bolts that were completely seized, and after trying heat and penetrating oil for two days with no luck, I gave the nut a few sharp taps with a hammer while applying steady torque with a long breaker bar. It broke the rust seal and they all came free without shearing. Has anyone else found a better method for this that doesn't risk damaging the bolt head?

Actually, that method sounds like a great way to snap a bolt head clean off. Hitting a nut under load puts all kinds of weird stress on the threads you can't see. You just got lucky this time. A proper impact wrench would give a controlled shock without the sideways force, or even an induction heater to break the rust bond safely. Why risk making a simple job way worse?

My buddy tried that exact thing on his truck's lug nuts last winter. Heard a nasty crack and spent the whole afternoon drilling out a broken stud. Sometimes the old hammer trick just costs you more time.

Agree, an induction heater seems way smarter for hidden rust.
