Had to pick between a fire watch and a real weld test

Got offered a shutdown gig in Gary last month, but they wanted me to do 2 weeks of fire watch first before touching a torch. Took the weld test instead, 6G on 2 inch sch 80, and it went way better than I thought. Passed it on the first try and got straight onto the crew. Anyone else ever skip the easy money to prove yourself on the test?

so you turned down paying work to take a test that might not have even passed? thats ballsy man. but did the foreman actually respect that more or did you just get lucky with a decent crew? i've seen guys ace the 6G and still get treated like a helper for weeks, while the fire watch guy who talked sports with the super got first pick on the good jobs. hows the crew treating you now that you're actually running beads?
