I ran .035 flux core for a decade and always set the wire speed by ear, figured the crackle meant it was good. Last Tuesday a QC guy at the fab shop in Tulsa watched me run a bead and said my arc was too long, the wire was feeding just a bit slow. He dialed it up 15 IPM and the puddle laid down flat, so how do you actually set wire speed when the machine dials are worn?
