Do we gatekeep too hard or not enough? The 2,000+ game collection debate

I read a thread last month where someone called a guy with 2,000 games a hoarder, but then another person said you can't call yourself a geek unless you own at least 500, and it got me thinking about where the line really is. My buddy in Portland has maybe 40 games but plays every single one weekly, while another friend in Austin has shelves of unplayed Kickstarters and admits he just likes the unboxing. So which is it, are we about owning stuff or actually playing it, and does anyone else feel like the community shames both sides equally?

Ha! Honestly, I'm gonna take the opposite side and say the gatekeeping is way too soft. If you own 2,000 games but can't name your top 10 from the last five years, you're not a collector, you're a storage unit. My whole thing is this, owning a game you never boot up is like buying a book just to sniff the pages. The guy with 40 games he actually plays is a real gamer in my book. The Kickstarter shelf queen is just a mall shopper with a credit card. So yeah, I'd rather see people get shamed for hoarding plastic than for playing what they love, cause one of those things actually takes effort.
