Back in 2015, I had to choose between buying a rare expansion or paying for a trip to a big convention.

The expansion was for an out-of-print game I loved, listed for $120 online. The convention was Gen Con, and the trip would have cost me about $400 total. I picked the expansion, thinking the game time with my local group was more important than the travel. Honestly, I still have that box, but I missed meeting the game's designer that year, which I regret. Sometimes I wonder if the experience would have been better than the thing. Anyone else pass on a big event for a specific game piece?

Been there. I kept a rare promo card over a trip once. The trick is to actually play with the thing you bought. If that box is just on a shelf, the trip would have been better. Use it next game night, that's how you know.

Missing the designer is rough, but I've kept game stuff that still makes me happy years later, so maybe it worked out.

Still makes me happy years later" feels like a low bar, honestly. If you're just keeping old game stuff out of habit, is it really adding that much? Sometimes we just get used to having things around and call it happiness.
