Vent: Wasted $50 on a "forge welding flux" that's just borax
Picked up a small bag of special flux from a vendor at a show near St. Louis last month. Got home, checked the ingredients, it's literally just plain old borax with a fancy label. Could have grabbed a box at the grocery store for $3. Has anyone else run into this kind of overpriced repackaging?

Borax is borax but that label is what makes it weld better.

Oh man, that "special flux" thing is such a racket. My buddy Rick from the smithing guild dropped $40 on a little jar of "premium welding compound" at Quad Cities last year. Got home and same deal, it was just borax with a tiny bit of iron oxide mixed in for color. He was so mad he used it to pretreat his laundry stain and it worked better than the fancy stuff. Still stings every time he sees that stupid jar sitting on his shelf.

$40 for borax with a little rust in it? Sounds like Rick needs a different hobby.
