Saw a working forge at the Genesee Country Museum and the guy had one trick I never thought of
Stopped by the 1800s village in Mumford, NY over the weekend and the smith there was forging out a set of tongs right in front of everyone. Instead of quenching his punches and chisels in oil, he kept a bucket of water with a thick layer of old motor oil floating on top, said it cools fast but the oil film keeps the steel from cracking. He runs about 15 pieces a day that way and claims he can't remember the last time one split. Any of you tried the water plus oil layer thing, or is that just asking for a cracked tool?
