PSA: I spent 3 years quenching in dirty water before I figured out why my blades kept cracking
I was chatting with an old timer at the supply shop in Abilene last Tuesday and he asked what I quench in. Told him my water tank and he just shook his head and said "how often you change that water?" I never changed it. Just topped it off. He said all the scale and oil floating in there was making my steel cool uneven on one side, and that's why my 1084 blades kept cracking at the edge. Now I'm torn on whether to just use fresh water every session or shell out for proper quench oil, what do you all run for simple carbon steels?
