After my blade cracked, I'm torn between oil and water quenching.

Honestly, some smiths say oil is safer for avoiding cracks, but others swear water gives a better edge. Tbh, what's your take on this?

What steel were you using when it cracked?

Ever wonder if the pre-heat was wrong before it even hit the anvil? @robinson.max, too many guys just look at the steel type stamped on the bar and blame that. Most cracks I've seen come from bad thermal cycling, not the alloy itself. You can have perfect 5160 and still wreck it by rushing the heat treat. Stop blaming the metal and look at your own process first.

That book on Japanese blades said water works if your heat control is perfect, @the_christopher.
