A master smith at a demo told me my hammer blows were too heavy and I needed to let the steel do the work
I was at a guild meeting in Ohio last spring and this old timer watched me for five minutes before saying 'you're fighting the metal, not moving it'. He showed me how to use lighter taps and let the heat guide the shape. Has anyone else had to unlearn bad habits they picked up from watching too many YouTube videos?

Had a similar thing happen with a woodworking project for my wife's garden fence. Watched a dozen videos on mortise and tenon joints, went at it with a mallet like I was driving railroad spikes. This retired carpenter walking his dog stopped and asked if I was trying to split the wood or join it. Told me to feel the hammer head drop instead of swinging it down. Took me three more tries to get it right but now I can tell the difference between a good tight fit and forcing it. Funny how the old guys who learned before the internet just feel things different than us who watched it on a screen. Still catch myself going heavy when I get frustrated though.

Tweak the timing not just the force. A slower hammer with proper heat does more than a fast heavy one.
