Rant: everyone tells new watchers to skip season 1 of The Wire and that is flat wrong
I was at a cookout in Baltimore last weekend and heard a guy tell his cousin to start The Wire at season 2 because season 1 is "too slow." I bit my tongue then, but I can't let it go. Season 1 is 13 episodes and it sets up every single relationship that pays off later, the whole Barksdale crew, the detail, all of it. Telling someone to skip it is like telling them to start a book on chapter 9 because the first few chapters are quiet. My brother skipped it on that advice and called me confused for 4 episodes about who half the cops even were. If you quit on season 1 after 3 episodes, that is a you thing, not a show thing. Did anyone else get told to skip ahead and regret it?
Did your brother ever go back and watch season 1 after he finished? My buddy did the same thing, started at season 2 on a friend's tip and spent the whole time asking me who Stringer was and why everyone was so scared of him. He finally went back and watched season 1 later and told me he felt like an idiot for waiting, said it was like meeting your in-laws after the wedding. The setup is the point of that season, it earns all the stuff that comes later, and skipping it just makes everything else feel flat. Half the people giving that advice probably only watched it once themselves years ago and forgot how much they missed the first time.
