The drop bar tape job that fought me for 40 minutes taught me to check the bar first
Had a customer's bike in the stand last Wednesday and the old tape was coming off in chunks, so I figured it was a quick rewrap before close. Started wrapping from the drops like always and it kept bunching up and sliding, and I must have unwound and restarted that same side four times. Around the fifth try I ran my thumb along the bar and felt a little dent right near the bend, probably from the bike tipping over in a garage years ago. The tape wasn't the problem at all, the bar had a slight flat spot so nothing would sit even. I swapped in a cheap alloy bar I had in the parts bin and the wrap went on clean in one pass. Forty minutes gone on a job that should have been ten. Now I run a finger down the whole bar before I even cut tape, which sounds obvious but I guess I needed a bad night to make it a habit. Any of you got a pre-check you always run that you had to learn the hard way?
