The 1985 Stumpjumper had a 1 inch threaded steerer and now everything is tapered and through axles
When I started doing repairs at a shop in Portland in 1992, I could true almost any wheel with a single Park Tool spoke wrench and a dish stick, and most bikes that came through the door still ran 1 inch threaded headsets and rim brakes. Now I have to stock six different headset press adapters and a separate set of tools just for thru axles, hydraulic lines, and boost spacing, and half the time the frame standards change again before I have paid off the tooling. Does anyone else miss when a new bike meant a new bike and not a whole new set of specialty tools?
