Rant: brand new chain skipping on a 2 week old cassette

Put a fresh Shimano chain on a customer's bike yesterday in Boise and it skipped like crazy under load in the middle of the test ride. Turns out the cassette was fine but the derailleur hanger was bent maybe 2mm from a drop they didn't mention. Has anyone else chased a ghost like that only to find the hanger was the real culprit all along?
