Just realized how much a truing stand upgrade helps

I stopped by a shop in Portland last month and they let me watch them true a wheel on a Park TS-2.2, which is way stiffer than my old homemade setup. After I got home I measured the runout difference on the same wheel, it went from about 0.8mm wobble down to 0.2mm just by using a proper stand. Has anyone else seen that big of a jump from just the stand, or is it more about the spoke wrench technique?

Funny thing about that... I actually snapped the arm off my old Park truing stand trying to get a stubborn dent out of a rim, and ended up using a banana as a makeshift indicator mount for two weeks. The wheel came out okay but my mailbox still smells like old fruit. So yeah, a proper stand does matter, but sometimes you just work with what you have.
