Appreciation post: the old guy running the shop in Spokane who told me my spoke tension was "all over the map"
I was building wheels for 6 years by feel and ear and thought I had it down. He put my wheel on his Park tension meter, wrote down 14 spoke readings, and handed me the paper. Range was 40 kgf top to bottom. He said, "You got a song, not a wheel." I bought a meter that week and now I get within 10 kgf before it ever hits a truing stand. What's your spread on a hand built wheel, and did you learn it the same hard way or did somebody hand you a number first?
